10 STEPS TO SANITIZE YOUR HOTEL ROOM, CABIN OR HOME

Corona Virus edition:

Sanitize anything that comes into your house, such as groceries and deliveries.  Wipe down food and other packaging with a disinfectant wipe. Only use products that have been approved on the approved EPA list below.

Pack Cleaning Supplies

Before you can sanitize, you have to make sure you have the right supplies. Here’s a list of what you’ll need: disinfectant wipes, disinfectant spray, dish washing liquid, disposable gloves and a ziplock baggie. All wipes are not created equal, so make sure you are buying a type that kills the germs you need it to, like corona norovirus. Pour your dish washing liquid in a 3 oz toiletry container to save space.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is arming consumers with a list of disinfectants that people can use to protect themselves from the novel coronavirus.

Do not mix these cleaning products:

  • Bleach & Vinegar

  • Bleach & Ammonia

  • Bleach & Rubbing Alcohol

  • Hydrogen Peroxide & Vinegar

Don’t Put Your Purse, Suitcase or Jacket On The Bed or Other Surfaces

By the time you make it to your hotel or cruise ship, you have dragged your suitcase through fifty-seven million types of bacteria. Do yourself a favor and leave that germ-infested suitcase on the floor while you unpack. Or plop it on top of the thick mat that cruise lines sometimes provide.

Wash Your Hands

Before you can get down to the business of cleaning your room, you have to rid your hands of the germs you’ve picked up while touching handrails, door knobs and elevator buttons. Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Dry them on a clean towel. Put your disposable gloves on and get to work.

First Clean if Necessary, Then Disinfect

First, clean the surfaces, removing any contaminants, dust, or debris. You can do this by wiping them with soapy water (or a cleaning spray), all purpose cleaner and a hand towel.

Then apply a surface-appropriate disinfectant. The quickest and easiest way to do this is with disinfecting wipes or disinfectant spray.

Target Your Homes’ High-Touch Surfaces

Door handles and light switches are high-traffic areas that can collect bacteria and viruses. You’ll want to be sure to use your disinfectant wipes to sanitize these areas well. This is a task that you will want to do often and not just on the first day.

Wipe down bathroom surfaces –Do we really need to talk about the germs that can live in a bathroom? Just be sure to wipe or spray faucet handles, spigots, toilet handles, seat, seat lid, and other hard surfaces.

Put Remote Controls and Game Controllers in Baggie

Remotes and game controllers have tons of nooks and crannies that are hard to clean. Best to put that thing in a zip lock bag and use it through the bag. That way, you can wipe down the bag when needed.

Wipe Down the Phones

Phones have lots of difficult to clean nooks and crannies too but you can’t put the phone in a zip lock bag. Do your best to wipe it down well, especially the handset. For saftey during the Covid -19 Pandemic, do this whenever you go out or might touch something before you touch your phone to your face.

Clean Hard Surfaces

Next, wipe down other hard surfaces like night stands, alarm clock, refrigerator, coffee pot, iron handle, desk, coffee table, etc. Anything that you will use often or will hold things that you use often like your eyeglasses, cellphone, tablet, etc.

Wash Glassware

If you use hotel or ship glassware to drink or brush your teeth, you will want to wash these glasses with some dishwashing liquid before you use them.

Wash Hands Again

Now that you’ve reduced your chances of catching a nasty virus by sanitizing, you need to wash your hands again to kill any germs you may have picked up in the process.
